Lion dance, or literally awakening lion, is a very popular performance art in Chinese traditional culture. This dance originated in the south of China and gradually spread to all parts of the country. With a history of more than 2,000 years, it is a traditional folk art in Chinese culture where two dancers perform in a lion costume to mimic the movements and behavior of a lion. Through careful cooperation and skill, the lion dancers are able to imitate the various movements and expressions of a lion, such as jumping, rolling, and shaking its mane, in order to show the lion’s vitality and ferocity.

As the monarch of all beasts, lions symbolize power, wisdom, and superiority. The lion dance is usually performed to bring prosperity, happiness and good luck for the upcoming year; therefore, we can usually see lion dance in China during the Spring Festival and other festivals. It commonly appears in other important occasions such as business openings and Chinese New Year ceremonies, attracting many individuals to appreciate.
