What exactly represents Reverse Logistics (RL) in the supply chain process? When the moment a product reaches its buyer, is that mean the job of the forward supply chain is done?
Everything after that point, including aftersales service, warranty management, defective parts, repairs, spare parts management, returns, as well as the associated transportation, liquidation or disposition including recycling, and buyback or exchange management, falls under the umbrella of reverse logistics. Many do not realize it, but most of the activities that make a supply chain sustainable and “green” happen in the domain of reverse logistics.
Considering the 5R framework for RL: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Resell and Recycle, we can integrate this with a proper organizational structure, as returned items are processed through this framework, most products or their components will find a new use, contributing to profits, and there will be not much left to recycle in the end, improving sustainability.
At Uniforce Mexico, we are implementing these mentioned RL processes to the 3PL service requirements for at least two Telecom customer projects, with equipment and spare parts management, and the other one, with e-commerce buyback or exchange management including equipment testing and reconditioning process. This kind of projects represent for us the beginning of a more integrated 3PL services offer that can fulfill the non-stopping evolution of the supply chain requirements.
